Personalized support for your dog’s unique needs

Based on the Saanich Peninsula, I specialize in compassionate behavioural support for reactive, sensitive, and complex dogs. As a graduate of the Karen Pryor Academy for Training & Behavior, my approach is rooted in science-based methods of positive reinforcement. I don’t just walk or train dogs, I help you foster a relationship with your dog that is built on trust, communication, and empathy. If your dog experiences the world deeply and could benefit from thoughtful, individualized support, you’ve found the right place.

I created Compassionate Canine with one guiding principle: no one should have to navigate their dog’s complex needs alone. As someone who knows the feelings of a difficult walk – where you feel embarrassed, isolated and judged for your dog’s behaviour – I’m here to offer you a safe place to start again. At Compassionate Canine, you will not only find expert guidance, but genuine empathy for both you and your dog. We’ll work together to cultivate a deeper understanding of your dog’s unique needs, while empowering you with the knowledge and skills to enjoy the world together again.

Customer testimonials

A few reflections from clients who I've been fortunate enough to work with:

"Meg is an exceptional dog trainer and human. Meg supported us as we navigated living with two dogs, each with big feelings about the world and each other. In short, it was chaos - we were overwhelmed and freaked out. She understood and validated our experience, instilled hope, and offered practical & doable suggestions to create change. Meg has it all - she is as skilled with humans as she is with dogs."

Current Client
"Meg is everything you could wish for in your dog trainer/walker, and more! Quite aside from her excelling at all the various training modalities & techniques that could be useful in any given moment, Meg has the “gift” of instantly establishing deep rapport with the dogs under her care. This is grounded in the genuine love she feels for them, and to which they instantly respond."

FAQ

If something remains unclear, please reach out! I'm hear to support you and your dog every step of the way, so you can move forward with confidence.

Where do your service?

I predominantly service the Saanich Peninsula - Sidney, North Saanich, Central Saanich, Brentwood Bay, Saanichton, and Cordova Bay. If you need support and live outside these areas, please reach out and I will do my best to accommodate.

What's your rainy day / extreme weather policy?

A little rain doesn’t make us melt and actually makes the smells of the world come alive for our dogs! However, you and your dog’s safety comes first. Some dogs are sensitive to not-ideal conditions, and if this is the case, please let me know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly. In cases of heavy rain, extreme heat or cold, storms, or other unsafe weather conditions, sessions may be modified, moved indoors, rescheduled, or postponed. I’ll always communicate as early as possible if weather may impact your appointment and work with you to find the best alternative.

What can I expect during a consultation?

I offer free 20 minute consultations (in person or virtually/phone). They are relaxed, informative, and tailored to you and your dog. We’ll talk through your goals, concerns, your dog’s history, daily routine, and any challenges you’re experiencing. I’ll observe, answer questions, and outline a personalized plan with clear next steps based on what’s best for you and your dog. This is a collaborative conversation designed to set everyone up for success.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. I am fully insured by ProFur (Acera) and hold a valid inter-community business license, so I can responsibly operate within various areas of the Greater Victoria Region. I operate in accordance with local regulations and professional standards. Proof of insurance is available upon request.

Can I be there with my dog?

This depends on the service you’re booking, but in most cases, yes. If your dog is being walked to give you a break or time to focus on other areas of life, there’s no need for you to join. I’ll provide a post-walk update covering where we went, any challenges, and any training that was practiced, so you can continue reinforcing those skills on your own walks. For private training sessions, your presence is essential. This allows me to coach you through the exercises, answer questions in real time, and ensure you feel confident applying the techniques between sessions. Your involvement plays a key role in your dog’s progress!
